Musicke in the Ayre – Piety and play in Versailles
Wed 9th July, 18:00 – 19:00
Musicke in the Ayre return to the Silk Mill with another delicious slice of the early Baroque, served by their trio of sopranos supported by archlute and baroque guitar, this time with a French flavour. Sacred motets by Charpentier will contrast with secular pieces by Lully and Lambert, written to entertain the Versailles Court..
Ensemble founder/director/accompanist Din Ghani first put together this line-up of singers (Maria Danishvar, Jane Hunt and Philippa Neaverson) in 2016 to explore the relative rare repertoire of music for three sopranos, which first emerged around the beginning of the Baroque period from the Ferrara court and spread to Mantua, Florence and Rome, and later influenced the French. This team have since performed in this line-up 15 times, including three previous Frome Festival appearances.
More broadly, Din has performed with them (plus other singers from the wider Musicke in the Ayre team spread across the country) individually and in different combinations, in over 175 concerts across the UK and on the Continent, since 2011. Most of the period instruments used by Din were made by him (including the two used in this concert).
A bar will operate outside the Silk Mill.
Tickets £15 at the door or via this link.
